The Sights of Sicily:
Glorious Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and is steeped in history. The beauty, position and climate has always made it behind oustanding relics of great civilizations. Nowhere in the world will you find magnificent Greek temples, Norman cathedrals, Byzantine and Roman mosaics and enchanting Baroque palaces all in one island. Busting Palermo, the island’s capital city, is built around a splendid natural harbour.
In addition to its excellent shops and restaurants, Palermo has many fine churches and some interesting examples of Norman monuments art nouveau. To the west lies the old seaside town of Castellamare del Golfo, with its sandy beach just 5 minutes’ drive away. The territory is mostly hilly, though there are some higher mountains along the Northern coast (the Peloritani, Nebrodi and Madonie) and the highest and major active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna (3323 m), and just below it is the fertile, large Plain of Catania.
Taormina, Sicily's best know resort holds a panoramic position above the coastline. Its Greco-Roman theatre, where concerts are held in July and August, has fine views of Mount Etna; Cefalu, picturesque madieval city embracing a superb sandy beach. Magnificent 12th century Norman cathedral with Byzantine mosaics including the famos Christ Pancrator.
Syracuse, is a 5th century BC Greek theatre carved from solid rock, one of the largest and finest in the ancient world.
